Only 5 Days Away

Loki
Only 5 Days Away: the butterflies in my stomach tell me I don’t have much time before the Clarion Write-a-Thon starts. My goals for this year: to write 600 words a day for 42 days (for a total of 25,200 words) to finish my first novel. Please sponsor my first novel and other, future excellent writers by pledging anything you can spare at http://clarionwriteathon.org/members/profile.php?writerid=348301. You can read more about the Write-a-Thon at http://clarionwriteathon.org/.

Plus, if you’re wondering if you should sign-up for the Write-a-Thon, I promise to be your own personal cheerleader if you do. And have you seen my pom-poms?

Clarion's Write-a-Thon

Loki
I didn't expect to make it early.

As of 6:55pm tonight, I have met my Clarion Write-a-Thon goal of 11,000 words in six weeks – or in my case, four weeks. I owe a big thank you to all my sponsors and pledges. Your support fueled my drive to write every night and exceed my goals regularly. Knowing you believed in me and back my desire to support the Clarion Writers' Workshop proved to be a very powerful motivator.

Anyone interested in sponsoring me can do so at my Clarion Write-a-Thon website: http://clarionwriteathon.org/members/profile.php?writerid=128931. For anyone interested, you can read the excerpts from the writing I did during the Write-a-Thon by clicking the SHOW/HIDE EXCERPTS button at the bottom of my profile page. Please keep in mind this was rough draft writing; I haven't edited it. Forgive all spelling and grammatical errors as well as awkward phrasing. I will clean it up in the next draft.

If you do not want to sponsor me, please do consider sponsoring the Clarion Write-a-Thon project by donating at the website: http://clarionwriteathon.org.

Again, thank you for your time and support.

Guess what I found out? I can still accept sponsorships and donations for my Clarion Write-a-Thon. So, if you had wanted to sponsor (one time donation) or pledge (money per word), you still have time. You will be helping me to support Clarion's Writers Workshop, an intense six week writing program that is one of the oldest and most well-respected writers' workshops in the nation. For more information about the Clarion Writers Workshop, please visit their website at http://clarionwriteathon.org.

All donations can be declared on your taxes. The Clarion Write-a-Thon and the Writers Workshop is governed by the Clarion Foundation. Established to ensure, despite the economy, the high quality of the Writers Workshop, the Clarion Foundation is a legally incorporated non-profit organization, awarded charitable (501(c)(3)) status by the I.R.S. Your donations to the Foundation are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

If you wish to see what your money will purchase, you can visit my writer's profile at http://clarionwriteathon.org/members/profile.php?writerid=128931. You can see my goals, monitor my progress (one week down, five more to go!), and read experts from my novel. If you like what you see, click the button and donate or pledge.

To those who have, I thank you. While you support an organization I believe in, you also support me in a life goal. I do not have the words of gratitude to express what it means to have the support.

Anyway, back to enjoying my weekend. I hope you enjoy yours as well!

In case you didn't know, writing is very important to me. I have been writing stories all my life. One of the items on my Ultimate Bucket List is to attend the Clarion Writer's Workshop, http://clarion.ucsd.edu. Clarion is the oldest writing program of its kind, and it is highly respected. Many of the greatest figures in science fiction and fantasy honed their skills and launched careers there.

Until I can attend, I decide to participate in the Clarion Write-A-Thon. As a participant, I will raise money to help writers write and Clarion mentors so we can share critiques, ideas, encouragement and good writing. It's the same approach they've used successfully for years in the workshop. I know it will provide me with just the kind of push I need to work on my novel. Completing my novel is important to me and helping other writers is a noble cause.

The Clarion Write-A-Thon starts June 24, 2012 and finishes on August 4, 2012.

I hope you'll help out by going to http://clarionwriteathon.org/members/profile.php?writerid=128931 and sponsoring my writing. Every contribution that comes through will show on my page and will drive me to do more and better, while also helping out future writers.

Thanks in advance! Please check back often to see how I'm doing and what I've written.

“I think [Thor’s] motivation is much more of a personal one, in the sense that it’s his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, it’s some bad guy who they’ve gotta take down. It’s a different approach for me, or for Thor. He’s constantly having to battle the greater good and what he should do vs. … it’s his little brother there,” the actor says. “I’ve been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but I’m the only one who is allowed to be angry at them. There’s a bit of that.” - Chris Hemsworth (Source)

“We live in a country where Wall Street’s recklessness caused tens of millions to struggle to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, and the rest of us to strive mightily simply to maintain our standard of living without falling into poverty.

“But only months after these jokers wrecked the entire economy, they’re back swilling the champagne and living larger than ever before at the expense of the rest of us.”

“I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultivation of altruism, of love and compassion, and elimination of ignorance, selfishness, and greed."

"Start telling the stories that only you can tell, because there’ll always be better writers than you and there’ll always be smarter writers than you. There will always be people who are much better at doing this or doing that - but you are the only you.

"Tarantino - you can criticize everything that Quentin does - but nobody writes Tarantino stuff like Tarantino. He is the best Tarantino writer there is, and that was actually the thing that people responded to - they’re going ‘this is an individual writing with his own point of view’.

There are better writers than me out there, there are smarter writers, there are people who can plot better - there are all those kinds of things, but there’s nobody who can write a Neil Gaiman story like I can."
- A bit of writing advice from Neil Gaiman. (via faramirs)

I said it on the Nerdist Podcast, and I believe it. It’s as true for any area of the arts, not just writing. Perhaps it’s true for life.
(via neil-gaiman)

(This is my permission slip I keep on my writing desk, next to my other permission slip that reads, “The biggest, most important piece of advice I could give to any aspiring writer is very, very simple. If you are an aspiring writer, write. Don’t think about writing. Don’t plan to write. Don’t hope to write. Just write.” Thank you, Mr. Gaiman.)

It only takes 20 minutes for the NYT to shift the blame.

After allowing them onto the bridge, police cut off and arrested dozens of Occupy Wall Street protesters.

became

In a tense showdown over the East River, police arrested hundreds of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators after they marched onto the bridge’s Brooklyn=bound roadway.

Don’t let this simply vanish, people. Don’t let them get away with this. Force the NYT to own this, and accept responsibility for lying to their readers, to protect the 1%.

They’re terrified of us.

They know that we’re coming for them.

This is only the beginning.

Archie Comics Sues Its co-CEO for Sexual Harrasment This is a different sort of “women can do anything that men can do” story than our usual ones, unfortunately. Archie Comics Publications has been doing a number of things that’s impressively beyond our expectations for them lately, like introducing an out gay character and tackling Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in nearly the same breath. And now for something just as unexpected, but completely different: The co-CEO of Archie Comics, Nancy Silberkleit, is being sued for workplace bullying and sexual harassment by her own company.

“Crazy 8 Press, the new internet-based publishing venture, has unveiled plans to sell original novels and short stories by established authors directly to their readers. Crazy 8 Press will initially offer new titles on a bimonthly basis, with an increased publication pace to follow. Crazy 8’s founders are veteran science fiction/fantasy authors Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Aaron Rosenberg, and Howard Weinstein. Together they have written hundreds of books and comics over the past 30 years, with combined sales of more than 15 million copies.”

“Perhaps, like McCarthy, Roth has simply lost interest. (McCarthy once said that he found reading fiction “a rather odd thing to do.”) Non-writers who have bailed on novels and short stories often say they’ve exhausted their patience for flagrantly “untrue” narratives. One blogger explained it thus: “I put it down to having experienced enough real life narrative and drama such that made-up stories no longer appeal.”

A tiny water boatman is the loudest animal on Earth relative to its body size, a study has revealed. Scientists from France and Scotland recorded the aquatic animal “singing” at up to 99.2 decibels, the equivalent of listening to a loud orchestra play while sitting in the front row. The insect makes the sound by rubbing its penis against its abdomen in a process known as “stridulation”. (via BBC Nature - ‘Singing penis’ sets noise record for water insect)
